Painting Light Through the Trees
The inspiration and process behind one of my recent landscape paintings.

The inspiration for this painting came from a scene near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I was drawn to the stand of trees and the way they created a natural pathway through the landscape.
The original scene wasn't specifically at sunset, but as I worked on the painting I felt the setting lent itself to warmer, late-day light. I enjoy exploring how light can change a scene — not just the sky, but the colours of the trees, the ground and everything surrounding it.
By adding the warm light coming through the trees, the painting developed a different mood and became more than a direct representation of the original scene. That's one of the things I enjoy about painting — starting with something that inspires me and then allowing the painting to develop its own character.
